Dancing & Health
By the Dancing Doctor, Diana Jo Rossano
Dancing has many health benefits:
1) Aerobic exercise: aerobic means with oxygen. When you exercise with oxygen your body burns calories. When you exercise without oxygen, you exercise anaerobic or out of breath. Fat burning decreases. Also, cardiovascular benefits increase with oxygen at a steady rate.
A good DJ will always keep the mix of music so there is a fast song, hustle or swing dance followed by a slow dance like rumba, bolero or waltz. Again, indicative of aerobic exercise. Your heart will say, “Thank you” as well as weight loss being readily available with a sensible diet. Please see: “Dancing & Health” for more information.
2) Less arthritis: People who exercise report less arthritis than couch potatoes. Less illness and just a better mood by dancing. There’s nothing like a samba to elevate one’s mood.
3) Elevated Mood: It is a well known fact that aerobic exercise encourages the body to produce endorphins. Endorphins are hormones that will improve one’s mood, outlook on life and that feel-good state of mind that we all seek for a positive self concept.
4) Meeting new friends: If you are single, a dance club encourages friendships. At the dance hall that I dance, it is rare that anyone knows your last name or what you do for a living. BUT, does he/she waltz? Foxtrot? Or how about that amazing swing? Relationships without any strings attached are ready and waiting for you dancing.
If you are a man and single, the odds at a ballroom dance are always two women for every man. But, sadly — from a woman’s point of view —three women to every man. Great odds if you are a single man. In many ways it is NOT like a bar, but the opportunity for love still lingers there. Many “matches” have happened on the dance floor.
5) Stress: Dancing beats stress. There’s nothing like listening to great music, holding your favorite dance partner and gliding all over the floor to help you forget about the stress of the day, a bully, or any care you may have to disappear for a few hours on the dance floor.
6) Better self concept: the more you dance and become proficient, the better you feel about yourself, how you look, how you interact with others, and begin to feel the self confidence you have been searching for in your life.
